Tax advisory for a small business means getting professional guidance on which tax scheme to choose, how to stay compliant with GST and income tax, and how to plan payments so there are no surprises. It is different from simply filing returns. Filing records what happened. Advisory helps you decide what to do next.
For a shop in Kharghar, a trader in Vashi or a service business in Panvel, the biggest tax savings usually come from a few early decisions: the business structure, the GST scheme, and whether to use presumptive taxation. Getting those right costs far less than fixing them after a notice arrives.
A good advisor works across the whole year, not only in July or March. Typical scope includes:
Section 44AD lets eligible small businesses declare income at 6% or 8% of turnover instead of tracking every expense. The 6% rate applies to digital receipts and 8% to other receipts. The usual turnover limit is Rs 2 crore, raised to Rs 3 crore where cash receipts stay within 5%. Eligible taxpayers are resident individuals, HUFs and partnership firms, not LLPs.
The upside is simple filing and no tax audit when you declare at or above the presumptive rate. The catch is real, though:
Professionals use a parallel route under Section 44ADA, with a limit of Rs 50 lakh, or Rs 75 lakh where cash receipts are small.
One more point for 2026: the new Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from FY 2026-27 and renumbers many provisions. The core presumptive idea carries over, but section references change, so check the current numbering before you file.
Many small traders ask this first. Here is the plain comparison.
Composition scheme (commonly quoted limits):
Regular scheme:
The right answer depends on your margins, your customer type and whether you sell across state lines. A trader selling mostly to walk-in customers may do well on composition. A supplier to registered businesses often needs the regular scheme so buyers can claim credit. Confirm current limits and rates on the GST portal before you decide.
If your turnover is up to Rs 5 crore, the QRMP scheme lets you file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly, while still paying tax monthly through PMT-06 by the 25th. Monthly filers file GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th. Quarterly GSTR-3B falls on the 22nd or 24th, depending on your state.
Also note a recent change that catches people out: liability flowing in from GSTR-1 is locked in GSTR-3B. If a sales figure is wrong, you must correct it through GSTR-1A before filing GSTR-3B. Careful reconciliation of GSTR-1, GSTR-2B and your books avoids lost credit.
Quick tip: always check the due date on the GST portal. Dates are sometimes extended by notification.
A Simple Annual Tax Calendar for Small Businesses
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 11th and 20th, monthly | GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for monthly filers |
| 13th and 22nd/24th, quarterly | QRMP returns, plus monthly PMT-06 by the 25th |
| Quarterly | CMP-08 for composition taxpayers |
| 15 March | Advance tax for presumptive taxpayers |
| 30 June | GSTR-4 for composition taxpayers |
| 31 December | GSTR-9 annual return for those required to file |
Treat this as a starting list. Your own mix depends on your scheme and turnover.

It can be, for small businesses with simple operations, because it removes detailed bookkeeping and the audit requirement. But opting out has a five-year lockout, and declaring below the prescribed rate can trigger an audit, so decide carefully.
It suits small traders selling mainly to end consumers within the state, since it simplifies filing. It does not allow input tax credit or inter-state outward supplies, so check your customer mix first.
It lets taxpayers with turnover up to Rs 5 crore file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly while paying tax monthly. It reduces filing effort but still needs monthly payment discipline.
Fees vary with scope, volume of invoices and filing frequency. Ask for a written scope and quote before you start.
